Lucknow, 21 July : The Chowk campus of City Montessori School hosted a two-day Model United Nations where nearly 300 students from prestigious schools of Lucknow were tasked with solving global problems through research, drafting, lobbying and debate to pass a suitable resolution. The CMS-MUN that started on Saturday also discussed the ongoing Peace initiative in the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region and deliberated upon the implementation and future of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
At the Model United Nations Conference (MUN-2024), a simulation of the General Assembly of United Nations Organizations, eight committees were formed on the lines of the United Nations, each having its own agenda on which the students playing the delegates from different countries held discussions and negotiations. Each committee had a chairperson and a vice chairperson to ensure the smooth functioning of the proceedings.
Mujtaba Ali Khan, the Secretary General of the MUN, said, “the CMS-MUN this year was action packed. For me, organising a Model UN was a monumental task and I am grateful for the support from the teachers. This was an amazing experience and we hope to hold many more such events in the same fashion.”
Under the United Nations Human Rights Council, the student representatives discussed the violation of human rights in Sudan in the context of the Geneva Convention. Under the United Nations Environmental Program, serious discussions were held on the increasing plastic pollution in the rivers. Similarly, at the International Press Committee, the students played the role of press reporters very well and made a great effort to make the public aware of various issues through their reporting, photography and videos. Similarly, discussions were seen in committees like United Nations Commission on Status of Women, All India Political Parties Meet and Joint Crisis etc.
